On a square field of matte black linen, a single butterfly holds perfectly still: its wings filled with hundreds of hand-cut natural wood discs, its body and antennae drawn in thick jute rope.

🦋How the butterfly is built

Step close and the "butterfly" dissolves into its parts. Each wing is a mosaic of small wooden discs — natural wood slices, each about the size of a bottle cap, each showing a tiny spiral grain at its centre. The discs graduate from pale cream on the outer edge to a warmer honey oak toward the body. The body itself is not wood at all: it is twisted jute rope, doubled and draped, with two fine antennae reaching upward.

The effect is not cartoonish. Because every wooden disc is a different shade, and because the jute body is rough where the discs are smooth, the butterfly reads as a sculpture, not a print. It is the kind of object a child points at and an adult lingers over.

It is the only piece in the collection you can recognise from across the room.

🦋A quiet drama in five rooms

We hung it in six interiors. The surprise was how soft it felt in a bedroom, and how confident it felt in a wood-paneled corridor.

In a long walnut corridor with matching lanterns, the butterfly becomes the only shape in a tunnel of wood — guests slow down. In a café bar at dusk, on the wall behind a wooden counter, the black ground picks up the dark mood of the room and the pale wings pick up the pendant lights. It works equally well in a book-lined study — where it sits beside a green banker's lamp and a brown leather chair — and in a sunlit bedroom, above an oak bed.

In a bedroom it is the gentlest thing on the wall — pale wood wings against black, the kind of image that doesn't ask for attention at eight in the morning. In a reading corner with a cream armchair and a stack of books, it becomes the room's quiet signature.

🦋Buyer's notes

• Square by design.

100 × 100 cm (also 80×80, 120×120).

Because the butterfly is centred, the piece wants a square wall or a wall with space on both sides — it reads poorly tucked beside a doorframe.

• Hang the butterfly at eye level.

Align the centre of the butterfly body with 150 cm from the floor. The antennae will then sit at a natural, relaxed angle.

• Warm light is its friend.

A brass or bronze picture light, or two small sconces either side, makes the pale wooden wings read as cream against black.

Avoid cool white light — it flattens the wood tones.

• It pairs with walnut, leather, brass.

This is a dark-ground piece; it belongs on wood paneling, cream linen, cognac leather.

On a very pale wall it still works, but the butterfly becomes the single dark object in the room — own that choice.

• Care.

Dust with a dry soft brush; never damp. The black ground shows less dust than a cream ground — a small, genuine advantage in a bedroom or café.
